Accompanist Job Description
Silverton UMC and Trinity Lutheran Church Partnership

General Overview:  Accompanies music of the church in a manner that enhances the spirit of worship and assists the congregation in praising and serving God. Assists people of all ages in the congregation in music-making experiences so that they

  • Grow in understanding in the Christian faith and music’s role in that faith.
  • Wil develop and strengthen their relationship with God through music.
  • Will gain basic music skills so they may effectively serve the church as music leaders.

Salary:                     TBD Based on Experience

Weekly Hours:       8 Hours/ Week

Vacation,                  Vacation, Sick Leave, and paid holiday time is listed in the Silverton UMC

Hiring Agreement  At the time of hire, the employee receives in writing a listing of their benefits, when they take effect, and their initial salary schedule. This benefit list will be updated and available in the Personnel Policies at Silverton United Methodist Church and Trinity Lutheran Church. 

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Select and prepare weekly preludes and offertories. Music selections for preludes and offertories shall be at the discretion of the accompanist but, so far as possible, selections should be consistent with service texts and themes. The pastor will give the accompanist ample notice of service themes to allow planning and rehearsal time. However, the pastor reserves the right to modify a particular service or series of services should the need of the congregation dictate, understanding the last-minute changes may not allow time for music modifications.
  2. Extra accompaniment may be expected during Christmas and Easter seasons, in consultation with the pastor.
  3. Accompany the choir, as well as soloist and other musicians as needed. The selection of choral music is at the discretion of the choir director.
  4. Accompany congregational singing.
  5. Participate in weekly choir rehearsals of 1-1.5 hour’s duration, and Sunday morning choir practices.
  6. Provide relevant information for Sunday worship bulletins in accordance with pastor’s directions.
  7. Arrange for substitute accompanists when necessary.
  8. Meet with and communicate with the pastor and choir director on a regular basis.
  9. The accompanist is accountable to the pastor and the Staff-Parish Relations Committee of the Silverton United Methodist Church.

Skills Required:

  1. Knowledge of music - especially church music for worship services and choral rehearsal techniques.
  2. Ability to:
    1. Sight-read music.
    2. Play wide variety of hymns.
    3. Transpose hymns.
    4. Musically improvise.
    5. Accompany both soloists and choirs in services and rehearsals.
    6. Rehearse vocal and instrumental soloist, and ensembles.
    7. Play four-part choral parts in rehearsal.
    8. Prepare and play prelude, offertory, and postlude.
    9. Record and edit music digitally.
    10. Work cooperatively with a variety of people and ages.
  3. Occasionally you may be required to play the organ.

Accountability: Administratively responsible to the Pastor and Mutual Ministry (TLC) and Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC - UMC). Subject to the general personnel policies of Silverton United Methodist Church and Trinity Lutheran Church. General church finances and building use are the responsibility of each church council and Trustees/Property manager.

Choir Director Job Description

  • Grow in understanding in the Christian faith and music’s role in that faith.
  • Wil develop and strengthen their relationship with God through music.
  • Will gain basic music skills so they may effectively serve the church as music leaders.

Weekly Hours:       6 Hours/ Week (September-June)

  1. Directs the choir by selecting and preparing weekly anthems for the choir, in accordance with seasonal and service themes, and in consultation with the pastor.
  2. Coordinate special music throughout the summer when the choir is not in season.
  3. Selects music for the worship service appropriate to the worship themes and seasons. Assists the pastor in the selection of music for the worship services throughout the year.
  4. Extra choral involvement may be expected during Christmas and Easter seasons, in consultation with the pastor.
  5. Conduct weekly choir rehearsals of 1 to 1.5 hours duration, negotiated with the choir.
  6. Arrange for substitute choir director when necessary.
  7. Coordinates and cooperates with the pastor as well as the office staff. Participates as a member of the worship team. Works with the accompanist regarding notice of anthems and other rehearsal material. Coordinates activities with the pastor and office staff.
  8. Develops an annual budget for the Choir program and music designated funds of the church and administers the budget when approved.
  9. Promotes growth and stability of choir. Develops musical skills of choir through rehearsals, coaching, workshops, etc.
  10. Purchase music and related supplies within budget allocations. Administers and cares for the music library, instruments, and other materials related to the music programs of the church.
  11. Hire instrumental and vocal soloists as needed for special music, not exceeding the amount provided in the church budget for the fiscal year.
  12. Obtain all necessary permissions and authorizations prior to any reproduction of copyrighted materials and instruct the office staff on the proper attributions.
  13. Establishes objectives annually for self and the various music groups for which responsible. Reports periodically on progress toward attaining objectives.
  14. Performs other related tasks as may be requested from time to time.

Skills Required:

  1. Knowledge and passion for music - especially church music for worship services and choral rehearsal techniques.
  2. Proven experience working as a Choir Director.
  3. Ability to:
    1. Rehearse vocal and instrumental soloist, and ensembles.
    2. Play four-part choral parts in rehearsal.
    3. Interpret various styles of music.
    4. Strong leadership and listening skills.
    5. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
    6. Effective communication skills.
    7. Record and edit music digitally.
    8. Be patient, creative, and assertive.
    9. Demonstrate exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
    10. Work cooperatively with a variety of people and ages.
  4. Occasionally you may need to play the piano or organ.
